What I Expected

I was as excited as a child at Christmas when Banu Mushtaq’s Heart Lamp won the Booker Prize. Yeah, I was one of those kids who only looked for book-shaped presents from Santa.

Having lived in Bangalore, the bustling heart of Karnataka, I thought — finally, a book set in the world I knew, inhabited by the kind of warm, spirited, resilient people I’ve known all my life. But I quickly discovered that Heart Lamp was not the comforting, uplifting read I anticipated. Instead, it delivered something far more powerful and profoundly unsettling: clarity. Earlier I’d reviewed the appalling setup on Amazon..maybe that should have prepared me.

What I Found

These twelve stories vividly and painfully capture the lives of Muslim women in southern India. They are filled with subtle humour, emotional insight, and unflinching honesty. Mushtaq’s storytelling is impeccable — raw power that throbs with the rhythms of small-town life, from crowded markets to the intimacy of biryani-scented kitchens.

Deepa Bhasthi’s translation ensures that the English retains the feel of Kannada, allowing us to enter the stories’ immediate and compelling realities. And in doing so, it bursts some prejudices — and reinforces others.

For example, I learned that my snobbery about the “ghastly Urdu” spoken by South Indian Muslims was uncalled for. It’s not Urdu at all, but a dialect called Dakhni — a mix of Hindustani, South Indian languages, and Arabic (with far fewer glottals, thankfully). Ouch. That truth was personal and painful.

What Broke Me

What churned up my insides was how Mushtaq confronted me with uncomfortable truths I had long resisted accepting. The age-old stereotypes about gender oppression within Muslim communities — which I had dismissed as overblown — turned out to be devastatingly accurate here.

The women, often whitewashed as “resilient,” are shown as trapped — forced into endless cycles of oppressive tradition by male-serving notions of honour. Instead of reclaiming agency and stepping away from brutality and servitude, their stories reveal a heartbreaking reality: there is no escape. Not in these pages.

The story titled Heart Lamp should really be called Heart Lamp Extinguished.

What Shifted in Me

The blurb calls it anti-patriarchy — but there are cruel, careless women in these stories, too. Women who inflict pain on each other with shocking ease. Not all villains are men, and that makes the sorrow even deeper.

Do I hate men? Not even remotely. I have a beloved husband and three wonderful sons. Do I scorn Muslims? Absolutely not — I have Muslim friends. But perhaps most of them are from the upper or elite classes. Perhaps they do not reflect the harshest of realities captured here. I don’t know. What I do know is that kind, strong Muslim men are rare in these stories — Mr Banu excepted.

There are a few “good-ish” men: the Arabic teacher who is secretly addicted to Indian-Chinese Gobi Manchuri provides light relief. But they are far outnumbered by the thoughtless muttawalis, thuggish brothers, and faithless auto drivers. (That last one stung — many of the kindest auto drivers I’ve met in Bangalore have been Muslim.)

This unwelcome clarity shifted my political stance, too. I had once been skeptical about the Indian government’s ban on triple talaq, and its efforts to regulate Waqf properties. But after reading Heart Lamp, I now believe such interventions may be essential to protect the rights — and lives — of women.

Why It Matters

Yes, I had issues with the untranslated Kannada, Urdu, and Arabic words. It felt like a stylistic flourish. A glossary might have helped. But that’s a minor complaint.

What matters is this: Heart Lamp didn’t soothe me. It scorched me. It forced me to look at things I’d rather not see. It shattered illusions I didn’t know I still held. And that’s what great literature does.

Mushtaq’s fearless voice reminds me of Dickens — shining an unrelenting light on the injustices of a world most readers prefer not to enter. These are not easy or gentle stories. But that’s exactly why they matter.

I was thrilled when “Heart lamp” snagged the International Booker Prize—what an achievement for Banu Mushtak and a huge win for Kannada literature! I went looking for the International Booker Prize 2025 Heart Lamp a Kannada book now beautifully translated into English, “Heart Lamp” throws light on Karnataka’s rich culture and storytelling traditions. In the International Booker Prize 2025 Heart Lamp – A sad show on Amazon is my reactions to when I went rushing to buy it from Amazon – and couldn’t get my hands on the book.

Let’s look at the Amazon page

That said, its Amazon listing could use some love. A lot of love. There’s no author photo or eye-catching A+ content to give readers a real sense of who Mushtak is and why her work matters. The book is tucked neatly under “Literature & Fiction → Short Stories,” but with so many titles vying for attention, it needs a stronger visual and narrative hook to stand out.

Equally important is a stellar author bio. Right now, there’s just a single line about Mushtak—hardly enough to convey her background, accolades, and the unique perspective she brings to her stories. And on the marketing front, U.S. reviews are conspicuously absent, which suggests we need a more concerted push to get “Heartland” onto American bookshelves and into readers’ hands. Here’s mine as a comparison – Susan Jagannath.

Pricing and Availability

There’s also the issue of pricing and the Kindle edition’s availability. A premium price tag paired with delayed digital access can discourage trial purchases—and in today’s market, instant gratification really does matter. A smoother, more accessible launch strategy could make all the difference in turning prize buzz into bestseller momentum. Seriously, I would have loved to help this book get a good launch strategy. Ok y ou say she won the Booker, she doesn’t care – but the reality is, that while the Booker does come with a financial prize, for an author, the real prize is getting your books into the hands and minds of readers who never know they needed your book. And Banu understands this – listen to her acceptance speech, its alight with the love of stories, and readers.

Despite these hiccups, Mushtak’s vivid characters and immersive tales more than deliver on the promise of her prize. “Heartland” is a journey worth taking—one that invites readers deep into the heart of small town India’s life and lore. Here’s hoping the publisher fine-tunes the online presentation so this gem finds every reader it deserves.

Here's a fun and easy way to create a video with your words in just 60 seconds. That quickly? You're right, we're using more AI tools. My previous experiments with AI tools covered interesting topics like tools to help you write and plan better. But I’ve discovered there’s a lot more you can do. For starters, you can turn the text in your book into an Audiobook. What's more fascinating than that is you can create a video with your words. I will cover step by step all the things you need to do to create a video with your words in just 60 seconds in this blog post.

Step 1 To Create a Video With Your Words – Generate a script

Firstly, you can use text that you already have written. It could be a piece you’ve already worked on or you can generate your own text using ChatGPT or Canvas AI content creator.

You could begin by putting prompts into ChatGPT or Canva unless you already have a topic in mind. For instance, you can start by naming the genre and what your central characters will be if it’s a fiction piece. Or if it’s non-fiction ask the AI to generate topic ideas around your selected idea.

You can build on this query to create an outline or draft and then build on it by asking the AI to generate more prompts.

For more about how to generate this kind of content, you can read up about it in my blog post on AI tools for authors. The next step is to convert this text into audio.
One important thing to keep in mind once you’ve generated the content from an AI tool is to use an AI detector to check how authentic your work is. It’s vital to make changes to the text it generates to make it sound more human and to give it your own voice. Remember AI is just a tool to give you ideas. The real writing comes from how you polish it up afterwards.

Write your own book in 24 hours? Sounds impossible? Or like clickbait? It actually isn't! It's really possible, and I am going to show you how.

I've helped 10 other authors publish their books and become Amazon bestsellers, in addition to writing more than three best-selling books of my own.
This is for you if you are a writer and you want to have a book written in 2023. But I have a confession to make. Do you know it used to take me 10 days to plan a book? I used to make everyone who coached with me take 10 full days to write a book plan. Then I wondered why it was so hard to get them motivated again. However, enter the game-changing artificial intelligence and ChatGPT. Now I find that we can do 20% of the work of the book now in a very short time. If you're prepared to sit down and listen to me and use ChatGPT and do the work, you are going to have your book done.

Additionally, if you have got writer’s block or want to write a book but you’re scared of all the work around it. Further, if you have ever written a book and then panicked at the amount of promotion and marketing you have to do, relax. Because now, all those boring jobs can be done by chat GPT. But first, we start with a plan. But if the thought of a plan makes you want to run away and hide or if all the promotional and marketing effort makes you want to run away and hide, don’t worry. It’s exactly the same thing. But now we have tools to help us. We have a writing assistant who can help us. We have our artificial intelligence to help us.
And stay tuned because I’m running an experiment now and I want to see whether I can give you the tools to do this in 24 hours. The full plan for your book, the outline, the targets, the promotion, the marketing material, everything so that not days, but at the end of the 24 hours, you will be ready with your book plan and first draft all on the path to writing a bestseller. Because remember, if you write a book without a plan, you are planning to fail. You must get that plan done.
Unfortunately, getting the plan done can be a major pain in the posterior.

I’ve been doing experiments with AI for a while now. I’ve done numerous meetups and sessions online about how AI can be a useful tool for writers. If you’re interested in learning more about ChatGPT, Canva, OpenAI, Quillbot and more join me in my other sessions. I am picking up on this discussion to talk about something really useful for you as an author.

If you’ve been with me on one of my coaching sessions you’ll know exactly how to publish and go bestseller on Amazon. What you might not know is how you can use an AI tool from Amazon to set up audio for your book.

It’s pretty magical to go from here to audio that can stream to someone who has never been to the Himalayas, or who has thought that their dreams were lost forever.

AI is not something that replaces the writing, it is really an enabler – we need to harness how to use it well.

How To Use AI to Create an Audiobook

It is the first step in my six steps to relaunch a book.

Because this is an experiment where I’m using AI voices from Amazon.

More specifically, Amazon Polly. Polly is a cloud service that converts text into lifelike speech. As an author, it’s quick and easy for you to convert the text for your book into audio.

Amazon Polly also supports multiple languages and uses a variety of realistic voices that can be adjusted to suit your audience.

This is the quickest, and cheapest way to convert an existing book to an audio format. Fiction and business books do really well as audiobooks, travel books not so well – after all, if you are travelling wouldn’t you like to see the information?

Before you start you need your book content available to cut and paste – Generate the latest version of the book as an .rtf file. I would have preferred a text file, but that isn’t possible from the application I use to format my books.

Set up an AWS account with Amazon, with an S3 tier. Set up a bucket for your audio files.

Select Amazon Polly the AI audio application from Amazon.
Select the voice you prefer, in a variety of languages – in English alone there are US, British, Australian and Indian. I recorded all four and asked my launch team which one they preferred.

Start recording by cutting and pasting into the Text to Speech box.
Click Listen to listen back to uptown 3000 characters. Test this a few times.
Use SSML switch to add some codes to indicate which words are Spanish, for example, or to add a longer break between sentences. Download to the S3 tier. If there are errors, fix them.

Download from S3 to your drive.
You can listen to it here, and maybe repeat from step 2 if you aren’t happy.
Rename the file to a sensible name.

Create your blog post/social media post, and link to the file on S3 or platform, such as Adilo.

Set up a podcast, or streaming service, such as Anchor, or soundcloud. Or create a page with the files as a bonus for your readers.

Your audio is now live! You have your book in audio content.

Transcript

Good morning. here we are in a new part of the forest. And today the countdown has started. We are exactly one month from our big hike and it’s getting real now. I’m getting excited about it. I wanted to show you me new purchases I made. I have a new hat because this hat, the one I had, I lost it in Spain.

And this has a bit of a creek. And we’re having a truck coming up here. Up the Creek indeed.!

hi officially, it’s Susan Jagannath and we are off on our walk today. Back on the walk. We missed it on two days because Sunday we don’t walk. And Monday, yesterday, I had to go to a friend’s mother’s funeral. that was a journey of a different type, isn’t it? Memento mori we will all die. But before that, we can get some walks in., here we are.

A new Cap and more

And as I was saying, I’ll show you my new cap. I have new hiking pants with lots of pockets! We are walking off on a new path. Now, this is a forest where we’ve done a couple of the tracks quite often, but we’ve branched off to a new trail.

Up the Creek

And there were me nice areas which I wanted to show you, but there was too much of noise. It’s actually next to the road, there was the noise of traffic. And as you saw now, the rangers truck came along. this is the path which we had planned to take.

We keep looking at the maps on the way. We take a picture of the map and we take it. But we saw this path. What’s that? Of course.

Easy Street

This is Easy Street. no horses, people are allowed to walk. It’s an easy walk. You can take your bike. How about we take easy street?

I’m taking easy street. Is that okay with you? Okay, we are walking off on Easy Street. And I’ve discovered when I’m walking with my trekking poles, my Fitbit counts only every second step. there I am, walking, walking a whole lot of kilometres.I know the kilometres by looking at the signs and by my legs, but the Fitbit shows only half the amount. And I think, seriously, I’ve only walked 1000 steps in the last four kilometres unless I’ve been levitating. That’s not true. what I think is happening is when I have my trekking pole, it’s probably counting only that step. And each time the trekking pole touches the ground, you take two steps. And I think it’s counting that as one step. To experiment I carried the trekking pole it and then my steps went up to more like the right one, because there’s no way I’ve done four kilometres with 500 steps, very big steps, and that’s not possible.

I was hoping for me Kookaburras to share with you. They were laughing. And the Kookaburras are bad. The minute they see you take out your camera, they go all silent and coy, but you can hear the breeze here.

The Significance of Today

Today – is we have exactly one month before we take off and I would like to invite you to come and join me on this trip. Virtually, I’m going to set up a Facebook group or a community, and I’m going to be putting everything in that. when I’m actually hiking, you can join in and you can be the first to see what we’re doing. Because, you know, for me to write a new book, I need to do a new hike. there are people who write business books and, yeah, they have it all in their brilliant heads and they have to get it out and write the book.

But for me, before I write a new book, I must go and travel and hike. And this time we are doing a 230-kilometre hike. And what’s exciting is I’m doing it with friends. that is really aweme. A whole group of us are meeting up and then we are going together.

that is good because we haven’t met each other in years and we love to hike. If you’ve read my other books, if you’ve read Valley of Flowers, you’ll meet the usual suspects there and who walk with us., yes, we do like to hike and meet new people, but it comes a stage in your life when you want to spend time with those who you really know and love. And this is what’s great about this hike, is that we meet new people, but in the evenings and on the way, we work with people who we have for years. look at that.

Okay, really should have my trekking poles here, but I take you on this live.

Maybe what I need to do is I need to find my selfie stick and put it up there. We did think of getting a drone. One of us buy a small drone camera, but I don’t know, it’s kind of expensive to get a nice one. And here’s the creek with all the fallen logs.

As I was saying, when I want to write a new hiking book, well, I must go and hike. Don’t I expect a new hiking book out. It’s due in 2023. But this is the right time to start it. I’m walking it now, and the book will pretty much be planned and finished by early 2023.

But the time to start planning is now, you can come and join me, see what I’m doing and see how the book is going. And maybe you can al start your own book and use my plans and templates and everything. I’ll be talking about that a little more a bit later. But I thought I’d share it with you here, because my life is walk right repeat. And in me cases it may be Walk. Write. Wine..

Repeat. When I say wine, I mean wine, not whining.

Listen to the birds.

This is Easy Street. We’ve had a few climbs but look at this one. It’s easy, but we are heading back. This escarpment is kind of a bit of bushland, which is being protected, but it does have a busy road running through it or at the side of it, too busy road. quite often you can hear the roads.

Okay, now Easy Street is becoming not easy. But if anyone is watching it, tell me if it’s clear, because when I download the video to get captions onto it, it looks all blurry. I’m not sure how good it is. I’m using my phone camera. I shouldn’t complain, I guess, but it is an iPhone camera, which promises all things.

Here is a lovely green valley. this is a creek, probably. It’s dry now, but there’s probably water underground. And it’s quite different because a lot of this forest is very dark. There’s Keith carrying the water.

we are both walking together always. And this time he’s at the back. He’s not doing the Indian husband walking in front thing because I’m doing the Facebook Live.

if you like my hat, let me know. If you like the hat.

Right, got the hat. It’s going to give me cover. This thing will come down. But I think I will all need a beanie or mething because it’s going to be cold when I’m going for a winter walk. I haven’t let you know where I’m going yet.

Can you guess? Okay, I will stop now. Thanks for watching. And countdown. 30 days before we go, every day there will be a walk and there’ll be a page or a plan for the book.

What Dows a Wallum Froglets have to do with a new book?

Hi and good morning. Here we are, Keith and me, on a newish trail. We haven’t done this exact bit of the trail, but today we are also trying for ten kilometres. So this is the Wallum Froglet trail and we’re going to try and do a complete circuit of this little little patch of bush, which we found here. Okay, so I’ll let you see the track.

Let’s start.

We’ve already heard a cacophony of kookaburras. We’ve heard the whip of the lyre bird and the chittering of a lot of birds.

“Lost your Bikes?”

We’ve done nearly four kilometres. And by the time we’ve finished it should be nearly 10km. There are a lot of cyclists on this trail. So we have been hopping on and off, teetering on the edge of precipices. We met some who asked us if we had lost our bikes.. a subtle hint that this track is for cyclists only? It’s not really, the signage is for walkers and cyclists.

But it’s a nice cool morning, but it’s kind of becoming humid suddenly. We actually got our rain gear. We’ve got the rain gear for our long hike next month. It’s a good time to check it out, not to buy extra stuff and just take what we have.

They are cyclists ahead and can possibly see them there resting. So they take these little trails and can hear them. So they have cyclists of all shapes and sizes here.

I might finish here and pick up later. We come in others. Here we are with another.

Are we on the right track?

Do we want to go to West mount Cotton or do we want to go to Wallum Froglet? I think we need to follow Wallum Froglet through a complete day.

What I imagine a cute froglet looks like – no link to reality

Even though this is a narrow path, I can see from the tracks that they have been bikes on it.

Are we on the right track?

So that’s a question we get all the time on the track, huh? Okay, so we are having a bit of an issue here. Which is the correct Wallum Froglet track? Was it that one or this one?

That track just joined back on the road, I think so I didn’t take it. Yeah, so as you can see, you have to walk a bit carefully. But yeah, I was getting onto are we on the right track?

Frequently question we ask in the forest, but it’s also a question that we ask in life. If you ask if you’re writing a book, am I on the right track?

And it’s a good time now, in the last quarter of the year, to think of these questions and make course corrections so that you reach the right place by the end of the year and not just where you daughter to or make a course correction so that in 2023 you are on the right track.

Is this a dead end? No.

So I have to walk this without my trekking poles. But you can see I do have my trekking poles with me.

Was saying, Is this the right track? Quite frankly, it doesn’t matter if it’s the right track. For us, today is a Saturday. Doesn’t matter. We don’t have a time crunch.

I do think it’s the right track. Yeah. It’s really close to us as well. So here we go.

It’s getting a bit rough.

And we are doing a bit of climbing, which we are quite happy to do, because the hike which we are doing next month has got a lot of hilly paths. Not too bad. Not as bad as the Himalayas, but quite a few hilly pots.

New Book

So this is a completely new trail, which we’re doing, and that’s like the completely new trail which I’m doing next month. I had done a couple of one of the other trails twice, but now this time we’re doing a completely new trail because obviously, I have to write a new book. Am I on the right track this year?

This year I’ve been on the right track in helping other people get to bestseller and write their books. So my coaching business has taken off.

But what it did was it stopped me writing my own books, because the amount of support which I had to give writers was just too much for me to write my own books. It wasn’t too much. I loved them. I’m so happy to see them go. Best seller.

But it kind of leaves me with little headspace. So these last three months, I’m only helping people to plan their books, not helping them to actually write and publish. That will be in January.

But you join me right now to plan your book!

Hi. So we have quite a steep path ahead, so I might stop this live. I’m also a bit out of breath. Yeah. So, yeah, I tried to get Darling online, but she couldn’t.

But that’s fine. So here we are.

Rain Gear

Here’s Keith, who is also known as my Sherpa because he’s carrying the water and the rain gear. Yeah, we got the rain gear. And guess what?

It’s not raining, is it? But that’s not the way it is for a book or a track. If you do the steps, you will reach the end. So I will finish up now. So steep trail ahead and I want to have a look at it.

But, yeah, do, like, share love, comment on this live and come back tomorrow.

It’s LIVE – The sixth edition of my very first book!

Amazon managed to squeeze in my Camino book update at the last minute of the feast day…

My book is updated to 2022. Usually, I dont have much trouble updating the book. In fact in the run up I’ve been sharing my six-step system to relaunch.

I regularly update the book, as its a guidebook cum memoir, so while I dont change my memories, I do keep abreast of changes on the Camino and Santiago. And sometimes, readers tell me what they want to see in he book, or what has changed.

And this time I’ve tried new things, such as AI Audio, and A+ pages for my sales page.

What I Did

I began this process about 6 weeks ago, and the actual updates went fine, with all my friends on and off the Camino confirming that there were no huge changes.

I checked every link and web page mentioned in the book, and needed to update a LOT of them.

I thought about changing the cover, but in the end, I merely added a “2022” flash to the cover, and I suspect that this was the reason the Amazon KDP bots got their knickers in a knot.

The Problems

I started the process on Wednesday, 20th, as a test case. Usually I have time to do a couple of uploads in five days.

KDP immediately told me that there was a problem with the paperback cover ( that I had NOT touched).

After a bit of emailing to and from and missed calls ( they said I didnt pick up, I never got a call), I used the previewer and saw the “Error”. It wanted the cover bleed to be fixed. shrug. I fixed it and boom, it went through. So the print book was updated and on Amazon from Saturday.

But of course I couldn’t promote it until the ebook updated. I emailed at 9 pm at my night and those emails seemed to get responses quickly. After 5 attempts, I got the KDP mail and apology, that the ebook was uploaded.

That’s all behind me – usually I get in and start editing again! But this time, I may hold off a bit. The ‘Zon bots seem to be on the rampage!

This is the second step on my six steps to relaunch a book.

And yes you will surprised at how many authors do not know the Amazon book page is meant to SELL your book! And unfortunately, other peoples books – but you have a lot of that precious real estate on the page.
It’s also a good idea to do this quite regularly, even without a re – launch.

Your Amazon book page is where readers come after they discover your book, or are fascinated by your cover and title, this is where they find your book, and buy it. But there is stiff competition, even on your own page, as Amazon pops up other books, from the also boughts and also ads from other authors.

1. Get Discovered

Get discovered by readers searches on Amazon – by using appropriate keywords.

There are seven key word fields on your details page on KDP where you can enter keywords. This does not mean you can enter only 7 keywords. You can enter as many keywords as you can fit into each of those 50 character fields.

Think of the search terms that readers might enter into Amazon when searching for a book..for example, if they heard of the Camino, they could enter “Spain Camino”. Lets break that down to explain the concepts. This phrase will target readers who are using “Spain Camino”, only “Spain”, and only “Camino”.

Tip: Do not duplicate these words in other keywords – Its a waste!

2. Pick the right “bookshelf”

Get suggested by Amazon – by using appropriate categories

Categories are like bookshelves in a bookstore, so Fiction, Non-Fiction, Science, Fantasy, Travel are all categories. A tip, look for the bestsellers in your type of book, and check what categories they are using. This leads you to discover whole hierarchies of categories that you may never have thought of before.
Use the power of old fashioned publishing – Amazon A+
Amazon has finally allowed all authors to use what only publishing houses could use – marketing material to make your page look more attractive and appealing. You can use a combination of images and text, depending on the type of book. You can even have different A+ pages for different markets.

For example, I have different A+ pages for the US and the UK markets.

So Amazon is likely to send more readers to your page.
After your almost reader has checked out your title and description, they always read what other readers have to say about your book.

This is the first step on my six steps to relaunch a book.
Because this is an experiment I’m using AI voices from Amazon.

Six Steps to Set up an audiobook for (nearly) free

Your audio is live! You have your book in audio content.
